With amazing shows like Seasame Street and books like
Go Away Big Green Monster by Ed Emberley or
Where the Wild Things Are
by Maurice Sendak, it is no wonder our children are fascinated with monsters. Bright, beautiful, and funky monsters that don't eat them or hurt them but instead bring huge smiles to their little faces. These whimsical and amusing monsters help our children get over their fears and expand their imaginations. Our latest project allows your child to create their own funky and wild monster directly from their imagination. When they are done, they will have a touchable work of monster art to hang on their wall and brighten their world

Supplies Needed:
empty cereal box
sharp knife
tissue paper in bright colors (you have been saving these right???)
White Glue
Directions:
1) Cut up your old cereal box into flat rectangular pieces.
2) Have your child draw a giant monster face on the non-printed side of the box. Direct them into creating oversized facial features. The larger they are the easier they will be to fill in later.

3) Take white glue and mix it with a small amount of water until it is slightly runny. We use old plastic food containers to hold our glue but you can use a bowl if you want.
4) Take your tissue paper and rip it into small pieces. These pieces will be rolled up into a ball so you don't want them too large and not too small; a 2" wide shape will be perfect.

5) Have your child roll the tissue paper into a tight ball and dip just the bottom of the wad of paper into the glue mixture. Then have them gently press it on the paper. Use different colors for different facial features. They will need to keep pasting in small balls until they fill in the entire face.
6) When all the areas are filled with color, your child will have a vibrant monster to hang upon their wall.
Tips and Tricks:
Use one giant piece of tissue paper rolled up to create the eyeball and top it with a itsy bitsy piece of paper for the pupil.
If your child doesn't like monsters, they can draw butterflies, fairies, flowers, or whatever her/his heart desire.
An alternative method of gluing the tissue paper is to paint the glue onto the paper and then lay flat pieces of tissue paper on top. This will not create a 3 dimensional work of art but is just as fun.
